The answer to your question is as follows:
Since you commenced your journey without the intention of travelling ‘Safar Distance’ (48 miles), you will be regarded ‘Muqeem’ not a ‘Musafir’. Hence you have to pray full salah (4 rakat). However, when you start your journey back to your home town (with the intention of travelling 76 miles) you will be Musafir and have to perform Qasr salah (2 instead of 4 rakats).
(من خرج من عمارة موضع إقامته) (قاصدا) ولو كافرا، ومن طاف الدنيا بلا قصد لم يقصر، (قوله قاصدا) أشار به مع قوله خرج إلى أنه لو خرج ولم يقصد أو قصد ولم يخرج لا يكون مسافرا ح. (شامی 2/122)
لا يصح القصر إلا إذا نوى السفر، فنية السفر شرط لصحة القصر باتفاق، ولكن يشترط لنية السفر أمران: أحدهما: أن ينوي قطع تلك المسافة بتمامها من أول سفره، فلو خرج هائماً على وجهه لا يدري أين يتوجه لا يقصر، ولو طاف الأرض كلها، لأنه لم يقصد قطع المسافة۔ (الفقہ علی المذاھب الاربعۃ 1/429)
